San Jose commercial permitting timelines are changing, making accurate planning even more important for upcoming construction projects.

The City of San Jose is currently advising applicants to add 2–3 weeks to published plan review timeframes for both initial and subsequent reviews due to high application volume and staffing vacancies.

What This Means for San Jose Construction Projects

For projects entering permitting now, schedules based on previously published review times may no longer provide enough time.

The City's published standard plan review timelines vary by project type and review discipline, but the additional 2–3 weeks should now be factored into project planning. This is especially important when permitting is tied to construction start dates, procurement, tenant occupancy, or other project milestones.

Accounting for the added review time early can help keep the overall project schedule realistic and avoid surprises later.

Build Current Permitting Times Into Your Schedule

Permitting timelines can change quickly, and even a few additional weeks can affect the overall project schedule if they aren't accounted for early.

MAI's preconstruction and project teams track permitting conditions across Bay Area jurisdictions so our clients can build more realistic timelines from the beginning.
