MAI we talk about National Electrical Safety Month

May has been designated National Electrical Safety Month by the Electrical Safety Foundation International to raise awareness of potential risks and encourage safe behaviors in the workplace and at home. At MAI Construction, we are committed to promoting safe practices both internally and with our clients since we recognize the crucial role that electrical safety plays in day-to-day lab operations.

Electrical dangers are present in every workplace, regardless of the business. But in situations related to the life sciences, risks are particularly common. Numerous studies call for the use of combustible, volatile, or otherwise risky chemicals and materials. Researchers, lab workers, and other personnel working in these conditions are at serious risk because defective electrical equipment, insufficient grounding, or improperly constructed electrical systems can result in sparks, fires, or electrocution.

Nearly 3 out of 5 workplace injuries in 2020, according to the National Fire Protection Association, were brought on by direct electrical contact. The most typical electrical risks are as follows:

  • Electrical shock – Occurs when electrical equipment is not grounded correctly and results in an electrical current passing through the body, causing burns, muscle contractions, or possibly death.

  • Arc flash – Arises when an electrical current jumps between two points, causing severe burns, vision loss, and hearing damage.

  • Fires and explosions – Happens when equipment is overloaded or not correctly maintained and can cause significant property damage and injuries or fatalities.

  • Chemical spills – Certain chemicals can create a conductive path for electricity, increasing the risk of electrical shock or fires.

Power outages or equipment failures can also be brought on by faulty electrical equipment or wiring, which can obstruct crucial research and result in expensive downtime. By ensuring that electrical equipment is installed properly, grounded, and maintained, a safe electrical system reduces the possibility of electrical mishaps.


Along with keeping occupants safe and operations running smoothly, there are many benefits to staying in compliance and prioritizing electrical safety:
